Hi All,
I started my other handmade only event called, “Hand Job,” a few years ago. That scope of the event was for only handmade items. I take the promise of that event very seriously to be only handmade items, as I want to make sure guests expectations of the event are met.
Well, I wanted an event where I could host spiritual practioners, in addition to handmade items. I did not want to confuse my audience from the scope of the other event, so I thought I would start this new event: The White Mage Fairâ„¢. It has a slightly different scope, so it merits a different name.
I decided on the name, “White Mage Fair,” after considering other names. I almost wanted to roll with, “The Good Witch,” as a reference to The Wizard of Oz, but some people (not necessarily my audience) are scared of the word “witch,” plus the name might be confused with that modern TV show; also, younger people might not understand the reference. I also considered using “bruhahaha,” as a nod to the Spanish word for “witch,” and some of the commotion of the English version of the name, but I thought some of the meaning could be lost to people who don’t know Spanish and English well. I also kicked around some names, with rainbows, unicorns, or other fantasy creatures, to kind of be ostentatious about the topic. I used “White Mage” as in video game terms, those are the healer-class of spell workers. I thought this worked well to appeal to younger people, younger people would understand what it meant, and it encompassed the spiritual healing nature of the event. I thought it might even attract a few anime/video game folks into the event too, which is not the core topic, but people who buy anime/video games, tend to have some spending cash at hand,
There had been another spiritual event around town (The Metaphysical Gathering), which was nice, but sadly it shut down as a result of the pandemic. There are a few other spiritual focused events out there, but for me, they are difficult to find and research as a vendor and as a guest as they do not have websites; they advertise through word of mouth and through social media. As for me, I don’t use social media, so learning about those events is near impossible. I don’t imagine I am the only one who feels this frustration.
Additionally, some events make it difficult to apply to be a vendor, filling out a sketchy looking Google document, or Venmo-ing a payment without any formally outlined event promise strikes me as unsafe. I want to do business in a professional manner, so a legit website, and professional payment system make my feel like the event has more credibility.
As for me, as a human, I want to enjoy the physical aspects of the event. I don’t want to be sweating outside. I don’t want rain to ruin my booth. I don’t want wind to blow over my silver jewelry. I want to be comfortable. I also don’t want to park my car in a risky looking place; no pop-up market is worth risking my car. So, that is why I aim to have my event indoors and at venues that have a dedicated parking lot. I also think that vendors and guests will also appreciate free and safe parking as well.
I don’t know about other organizers, but hosting an event can be very expensive. During this pandemic, I am going through a Saturn-return… if you know anything about astrology, that means old-man Saturn shakes around your life and invites you to let go of things that are not important to you… meaning, I have much less cash flow than before the pandemic. With this first event I was pretty lucky. I was able to barter erotic tarot card readings with a local adult-play store, the Love Shack, for some venue space. Well, for what is essentially free (minus my time), this is a great price to keep overhead of the event down.
I do plan on having other event instances at other times, but I don’t want to get too ahead of myself. I want to get this first event rolling, before I look to far ahead.
With that being said, you are very welcomed to join this event as a guest or as a vendor. If you want to sponsor the event, I am all ears!
